How to Price Your Services With Confidence

A straightforward way to stop underpricing jobs out of fear of losing them.

Pricing confidently starts with knowing your real costs, not guessing at what feels fair. Most contractors who underprice do so because they're afraid of losing jobs to cheaper competitors — but they often lose on price to competitors who charge more and just communicate value better.

Know your numbers before you quote

  • Direct costs: labor, materials, subcontractors
  • Overhead: insurance, tools, vehicles, admin time
  • Target margin: what you need to actually make money and grow
  • Market rate: what comparable jobs in your area actually go for

The mindset shift that helps

Customers who push back hard on price are often not your best customers anyway. The ones who choose the cheapest option will also be the most difficult to work with, slowest to pay, and least likely to refer you. Pricing higher, on average, attracts customers who value quality — which makes every job easier.

How to present your price

Quote clearly and without apology. Explain what's included, not what it costs. 'This includes all labor, materials, and a one-year warranty on workmanship' positions the number differently than just writing '$1,800' and hoping for the best. The framing does as much work as the number itself.
