Building a Referral Pipeline That Doesn't Rely on Luck

Turning happy customers into a repeatable source of new business.

Referrals happen more often when there's an easy, obvious way to make them. Most contractors get referrals passively — a happy customer mentions them to a neighbor, and a call comes in. That's great when it happens, but it's not a system you can count on or grow.

Why passive referrals aren't enough

  • Happy customers mean to refer you but forget within days of the job ending
  • They don't have your contact info handy when the moment comes
  • There's no incentive to prioritize the referral over a hundred other things
  • You have no visibility into whether referrals are happening or not

Making referrals easy to give

A simple text a week or two after job completion asking 'know anyone who could use our help?' does more than most contractors expect. Include a link to your Google profile or booking page so there's something concrete to forward. The easier you make it to hand off your contact info, the more often it happens.

Building repeat business alongside referrals

Seasonal check-ins — a text in spring about AC tune-ups, one in fall about heating — keep you top of mind for your existing customer base. These aren't aggressive sales messages, just useful reminders. Customers who feel thought of are more likely to call you first and refer you to others.
